CANCALE
is the attractive oyster capital of northern France.
This lovely little fishing port on Brittany's northern coast is famous
for its oyster beds, and every year hundreds of tons of these exquisite
shellfish are farmed and raised here to be sold to fish markets and
restaurants all over the world.
The picturesque sea front is brimming with wonderful seafood
restaurants. If you walk along the harbour you can contemplate the menus
at the numerous restaurants, or better still go inside one and sample
some of the freshly caught delicacies on offer.
Cancale's Ferme Marine invites visitors to come and understand
the life and ways of oyster farming from the seeding & harvesting to
the final delicate enjoyment. The guided tour takes one hour, which
includes a slide show and a visit to the Parcs St Kerber workshops.
Also there is an incredible exhibition of thousands of seashells from
all over the world, and a film on pearl fishing.
Beyond
the town are cliff top walks that lead down to tiny often secluded sandy
beaches, which are often covered at high tide, but where the local people
collect shellfish and prawns in buckets at low water. These sandy bays
are safe for paddling and swimming with numerous rock pools to explore.
Further around the coast are more beaches, and not very far west is
the lovely town of St Malo.
