Two excellent Cottages set in a quiet countryside locationLocationLe Vieux Courges is a beautiful 16th century farmhouse in Western Loire close to the Normandy and Brittany borders. And in it's grounds are the cottages Lavender & Thyme. These date from the 16th century and were renovated to a high standard in 2006 retaining original features where possible and are in the style of the area with stone walls and a slate roof. They share the adjacent site to our farmhouse and have a separate entrance and drive together with a separate garden. They are very similar in size, layout, decoration and furnishings, and provide comfortable and spacious accommodation.in a quiet rural setting. AccommodationThe accommodation which has electric heating, consists of a spacious and well equipped lounge/kitchen dining room on the ground floor The kitchens have a full size electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave oven, refrigerator, washing machine and freezer. The lounges have dining table and chairs, and sofas and armchairs together with televisions receiving English programmes, DVD and CD players. On the first floor are two large bedrooms and a smaller good sized bedroom with a double divan bed in the largest and two single beds in the others together with bedroom furniture. Arrangements can be made for an additional bed when needed. The bathrooms are very large with both a bath and shower and both cottages have two toilets. The large garden is mainly grassed, surrounded by trees and is shared by both cottages. The surround to the cottages consists of a gravel drive, side car standing area and rear gravel path and is big enough to take up to four cars with barbeques and garden furniture.
Places of interestThis part of France is in Mayenne, part of Western Loire and is close to the borders of Normandy and Brittany. The rolling country side is quiet and rural with the beautiful forest of Mayenne spreading to the east, full of pretty villages and towns. Historic St Malo, Dinan and Mont St. Michel are just over an hours drive to the north as are the sandy beaches around Granville. The historic Brittany towns of Rennes and Fourgeres are about 30 minutes away. Fourgeres has a medieval town and one of the oldest Chateaux in Europe. There is also a theme park near Combourg, about 50 minutes drive. The Loire valley with its many Chateaux around Saumur, Chinon, Tours and Blois is within 1.5 hrs drive and Le Mans with its historic town centre and famous road racing circuit is about an hour away. More locally Laval has a Chateau Museum, old town centre and attractive river front, with boating and river walks as possibilities. Nearby Mayenne also has a chateau old town centre and river front offering similar facilities. The Chateau at Lassay les Chateaux, Chateaux Gontier and the Roman fort at Jublains are also well worth a visit. Most of the larger towns have busy weekly markets selling a wide range of produce, goods and poultry. Towns large and small have attractive parks and gardens and are decked out with floral displays to gain awards in national and regional competitions. Roads are surprisingly quiet even in the summer and it is quick and easy to travel around and much less stressful than much of the UK even allowing for driving on the left. There really is much to see and do while still having a relaxing time or alternatively you can enjoy the solitude of the forests, the quiet and pretty countryside and the peaceful and picturesque villages.
