A Cosy beamed studio apartment that is full of character.LocationSet right in the heart of Honfleur, this house is less than two minutes walk from the picturesque harbour and the many varied restaurants, shops and of course the famous Vieux Bassin with its constant coming and going of boats & yachts of many nations. Honfleur is one of the oldest towns in France, and possibly the oldest in Normandy. Its exact origins were perhaps Saxon, or Scandinavian. What we can be sure of is that the town is historic, extremely interesting and charming. Fortunately, a tour of the town is easily incorporated into an enjoyable stroll and many of the streets are closed to traffic in the summer so you can wander freely, there is a market on Saturday mornings in the central Place Saint Catherine, which is always worth a visit. La Lieutenance, at the far end of the Vieux Bassin, guarded one of the two entrances to the fortress of Caen during the Middle Ages. The Eglise Sainte Catherine, above the port area was built in wood at the end of the Hundred Years War as a cheap version of something better, yet despite near destruction during World War II when a direct hit from a shell failed to explode, it is still there. The church's two naves represent the upturned hulls of fishermen's boats. The oldest building is the Eglise St Etienne, on the Quai St Etienne that lines the Vieux Bassin. The building dates from 1369. It now houses the Maritime Museum with its complete documentation and wooden relics telling of Honfleur's seafaring past. A short way outside of the town, a walk along the Cote de Grace will lead you to the charming Chapelle Notre Dame de Grace, situated in shady park land with views out over the mouth of the Seine. Enter the little chapel and see the plaques which line the walls, offering thanks for the safe return of local sailors. The interior is full of model boats on walls, window cills and some even hanging from the ceiling. This is an old fishing community whose traditions live on. AccommodationThe house is thought to date from as far back as the 16th Century and its pedigree can certainly be seen in the construction of the external walls and general finishes. Internally it has been tastefully decorated and comes complete with an ensuite shower room with w/c, a double sofa bed, gas cooker, fridge, and the essentials to make this a sought after base for exploring the joys of the region and especially the town of Honfleur. Outside there is a small courtyard and garden.
